Vocabulary is a necessary ingredient for communication to happen. There is a difference between receptive and productive vocabulary language knowledge. Receptive knowledge implies that the student recognizes the word that is being used, understands its meaning and the several contexts where it can be used. Productive vocabulary implies that the student knows how to speak, write and spell the word and also uses it in different situations. It is a teacher’s duty to choose, in a principled way, which words should be taught and when, having in mind that frequency plays a central role in language acquisition, processing and use. When learning a new word, students should focus on: - What it means - How it is written - How it is spoken - How it can be used - How it interacts and affects with other words - The word’s grammar essence. The introduction of more vocabulary should be made through activities that show the naturally occurring language, raising student’s awareness of the lexical nature of the language.
