This unit covered the aspects of teaching new language to students. In teaching new vocabulary, it is important to think about which vocabulary should be taught and how the students will learn the vocabulary. In introducing vocabulary and grammatical structures, the teacher should think of effective techniques for presenting and practicing the material. For example, in the engage stage, discussion and prompting are helpful. In the study phase, gap-fill exercises and drilling exercises are constructive. In the activate stage, role play and debate are effective in solidifying the students' use of the new material. Teaching language functions is most effective with boomerang and patchwork type ESA lessons. This unit taught some of the key concepts behind teaching a new language. Overall, it is always important to think about the level of the class you are teaching in order to create an effective lesson plan.
