Understanding the roles of being a TEFL teacher is a very important step in the teaching process. In order for you to stand in front of your students, you must know exactly what you are to be doing in the classroom. There are many parts of teaching that need to be understood, such as writing lesson plans, building rapport with your students, and gathering proper course materials. In this essay, these examples will be explained to give a better understanding of the role of the teacher. Before beginning your lessons, you should first learn about the students you will be presenting to. You should understand their skill level to better create a plan that is geared correctly towards the class. The students may vary in skill levels but it is important that every one of them is able to understand the course work. A good idea to understand where your students stand in understanding English is to give them a knowledge test. This test should not be graded and will help you build your lesson plans for the future. Once you have your lesson plan written, you can move on to collecting the correct materials for the course. Gathering the correct course materials is an imperative part of your teaching. These materials may be chosen by the institution you will work at. If you have a chance to choose your own materials, make sure they are correctly targeted towards your students’ skill sets. There are many things that can be used in a classroom, such as worksheets, games, and videos. Prepare these materials before the lesson to ensure no errors or hiccups. Though, it is also advised to have a back up lesson just in case something does go wrong. You should make sure that if your students do not seem interested in the materials that you can think quickly on your feet to bring their motivation back. Knowing your students well enough may keep this situation from not happening in the first place. Another important role of being a teacher, is making sure you know your students, not only in skill levels, but on a personal level, as well. Students are more willing to be motivated for classes if you build a proper rapport with them. At the start of your courses, you should know every student’s name as well as build some form of relationship with them. Some foreign language teachers choose to give their students second names to fit the culture of the English language. An example of this would be giving a Korean student named Seunghee the English name Steven and use that everyday during the course. This can make it easier for not only you to remember but for the student to understand English names better. There are many different roles that a teacher has, inside and out of the classroom. All of them are important but not all of them may be obvious. It may not be a bad idea to do research on the school and perhaps shadow a different teacher before stepping into your own classroom. This essay should help you better understand some of the important roles of being a teacher in the TEFL program. No matter what, you must keep confident and remember to give your students the same confidence for ultimate success in the classroom.
