Teaching new languages involves students be exposed to the language, understanding its meaning, understanding how it is constructed, and being able to practice and produce it. When selecting vocabulary it is important to choose based off of appropriacy to students, appropriacy to the task, the frequency and coverage in which it is used, and the teachability. Students must know the meaning, use, word grammar, interaction, spelling and pronunciation of the word. The degree of difficulty of the word depends on the similarity to the student's native language, the similarity to English words the student already knows, the spelling and pronunciation, and appropriacy. When introducing grammatical structures, the student must know its meaning, use, forms and pattersns, and how its spoken and written form. Lastly, language functions include inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing, suggesting and more.
