I learned that while it can be argued that there are only two tenses (present and past), it can also be argued that there are twelve tenses. These tenses are broken down into three different times (past, present, and future) with four different aspects to each (simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous). In this specific unit, I learned more about the present tense and its four variations. While I am familiar with the different tenses because I am a native English speaker, it was helpful to specifically name and categorize each because I often do not fully process which type of tense I am using when speaking/writing since it comes naturally to me.
