The English language is broken into tenses. While there are three times in the tense system (present , past and future)those times are divided into four different aspects: simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous. This unit dealt specifically with the present tenses of the English language. The present tenses of the English language are simple present, present continuous, present perfect and present perfect continuous. Each tense can be used in the afirmative, negative and question form and the usage determines how and under what circumstances a tense is used. There are typical errors committed by second language learners. As teachers we should be aware of those errors so we can help our students. Verbs are divided into regular and irregular. There are rules for changing the tenses of regular verbs. Irregular verbs, however, do not have any specific rules to follow. Their modified forms must be committed to memory for use in the different tenses. Some verbs are non-progressive and do not change their forms. The various tenses organize language in order to tranmit correct time.
