This unit covers the present tenses, which includes the present simple, present continuous, present perfect, and the present perfect continuous. The present simple conveys very basic information about present conditions. It includes facts like "The moon is round" and habits "I go bowling every Thursday." The present continuous conveys actions that are in progress, such as "I'm watching TV" to frequent activities "I am always playing golf." The present perfect relates past to present, and includes sentences like "It has snowed a lot today" and "I've left my hat at home." Finally, the present perfect continuous conveys past actions that are still in progress or activities that were in progress but relate to the present conditions> Sentences include "I have been writing for 3 months." and "I am smart because I've been studying for 10 years." I was surprised when learning this to realize how little the present simple is used in daily life. You almost never say "I eat food" or something to that effect. It has to be combined with something like "I eat food on Mondays" to be a more common-sounding sentence. Realizing this makes me appreciate the difficulty of fluently speaking English, as even the most basic sentences usually require something outside of the basic structure to sound natural in everyday conversation.
