This is a question that I have asked myself many times over the years. My experience in the classroom is important to me because it helps me to understand myself. What guides and motivates me? There are three 3 things that I have to learn that help mold me into the teacher I am. First and most important things I have learned is “Practice makes perfect”. A person must practice to polish their skills and talent. Teaching is a talent that requires creativity and flexibility. I have been teaching English for more than 5 years to students ranging in age from 2 to 6. Each age focuses largely on different aspects when you teach them. For 2 years old students, you may pay more attention to train their physical and lingual ability while for 6 years you may concentrate on their behavior, reading skills, and writing skills. Therefore, my personal teaching experience has giving me many creative and flexible ideas for teaching students at different levels and ages. This ensures that my lessons are interesting and dynamic to the students. Secondly, because of my personal teaching experience I have become a teacher that can deal with students with behavior problems effectively. I have been worked with groups 3 to 4 years old kids for 3 years. At this age, children are likely to imitate everything from their classmates or teachers. For example, kids would blast into a laugh if one kid said “ass” or “fart” in the classroom .They may not really understand why they are laughing, just want to follow whatever other kids repeating. In result, teachers have to be very careful about their own behavior and words in front of kids. To handle misbehaving kids, teachers had better give them choices to choose instead of saying commanding words like“you must ….”For example, one kid is jumping on the chair when a teacher has his or her lesson. What should that teacher do? From my opinion, that teacher shouldn’t say “you must to sit properly with an angry face, or threaten to throw that kid outside. Instead, he or she could gently tells naughty child that “you have two choices now, one is to sit properly and followme, another one is standing outside alone. And I believe you are smart enough so that you can choose the right one.” Meanwhile, teachers have to be very serious and let kids know how horrible their behavior is. Kids are very intelligent and sensitive, do not try to treat young kids as a dumb. Third, the personal teaching experience could help me to compare my own teaching skills with other teacher’s teaching skills, which could make me reflect on myself and supervise me to improve myself all the time. I used to co-work with a very negative teacher who is very conceited and always think her teaching way is authentic. She always insults a kid in front of the rest of kids in public and insist on whatever she has done is good for kids. She likes to show off herself and let other teachers or parents accept her ideas because she claims that she has more than twenty years teaching experience. As a colleague, I really disagree with her thoughts and rude behavior to children. My very first coworker who is from British taught me how to be a real teacher. He always keeps himself in a positive way during lessons and be very stern to those kids who like to make troubles. He loves kids very much and spends a great deal of time researching teaching materials and making teaching tools. Meanwhile, he is very hard to those kids who break class rules or bully other kids. Compare to these totally two different teachers, I choose to be a positive teacher like my first partner and therefore personal teaching skills could assist me to be a better teacher. My five years teaching experience shows me that although kids are very young, they still have their own pride. Teachers should not always scold them in classroom or favorite a particular one to trigger other kids’ envy among them. Teachers should treat all the kids in a fair way and use his or her sincerity and kindness to improve all the kids. Also, teachers should have the ability to motivate kids and the knowledge of subject they are teaching. Enthusiasm and sincerity are the most two important personality traits for being a qualified teacher. The reason why kids come to school is because they are not perfect yet, so they need to learn new knowledge and try to learn how to control their behavior and integrate themselves with other kids. Kids are not born to be perfect, this is why teachers taking a very important part in kids’ path of growing. Do not always disappoint your dear students. In a conclusion, personal teaching skills is like a lamp in the dark lightening my future teaching way because it is so easy to be at lost at the very beginning. The personal teaching experience could help me accumulate more experience about teaching skills and deal with each particular child. I will reflect on myself all the time and choose the right way so that I could be more flexible and resourceful and creative in my future teaching career.
