As an English teacher one of the first things that you are taught and experience is how to test your students and evaluate their progress. During my earlier years I had some trouble with this as I did not know which test to give or when to give it. This caused me to be very uncomfortable when it came time for exams. Though it may seem like an easy task it is actually not so straight forwards and it requires a certain level of skill in order to pull it off. After some research and taking the ITTT TEFL Course I am now a bit more comfortable with the whole process. A test by definition is an examination that is used to examine someone’s knowledge of something to determine what that person knows or has learned. In a language course a test is administered at the start, during and at the end of the course. At the beginning you can give a test called a placement or diagnostic test. The purpose of this test in to find out the level of your students before you start the course. This might be useful if you need to split them up into different classes of groups according to their individual language levels. This type is given as a once off and then the course can start with the teacher having a better idea of their students’ abilities. This will help them with setting the learning material that will be required for that particular set of students. The next type of tests that are given are called progress tests. These are given periodically during the course and they help the teacher to assess what knowledge has been learnt and retained by their students. This is useful to the teacher because it allows them to be able to focus on any problem areas as well as set future learning materials according to the level of knowledge that the students possess at that particular time. Then as the course is about to finish students are given some tests called practice tests. These must be of the same format and structure as the final examinations. They will help prepare the students for the final examinations and will give them some much needed practice. These are very important for the students as they will show them what they can expect for their finals. Lastly the students will be given their final examinations. These can be internal or external depending on the exact course and the school. These will now test the student on the general knowledge of the whole course and will determine their English language proficiency. Apart from setting all these tests the teacher is also required to be able to evaluate the results and make a general assessment of the results they get from the students’ tests. This will give them a greater understanding of any problems or hard areas that they can have and so will allow the teacher to set their focus on those and then get the best out of their students
