Each person has a different learning ability. Some are visual learners. Some are auditory or some learn best by reading and writing. Despite a student’s learning style understanding reading and writing is essential to progressing in the English language. The teacher plays an important role in helping the children learn to read and write. Patience and creativity are two qualities that will build a close, effective learning environment for the student. Let’s examine the importance of receptive skills in the classroom. First it is interesting to know that a student does not need to speak the language in order to understand reading and writing. However, learning receptive skills is the first step in allowing the student to move into productive skills. Basically, they are supportive to each other. When teaching reading skills, you can start with building the students vocabulary. It is also important to help them learn the English alphabet so they can put words together. Often times you can use things around you to build the students vocabulary. Books or magazines can help individuals learn new vocabulary. The teacher will also want to use vocabulary that is simple and easy to understand. If you begin with difficult vocabulary that is not easily understood the student can get frustrated. Also, repetition is helpful. The teacher can be effective by repeating the vocabulary so they can understand. Audio can be played as well so they can connect the two. This may help the student remember the word. Also, the students should start to pick literature to read that they enjoy. This will help them want to read instead of feeling like a chore or an assignment. Writing is also very important in helping the student progress in the English language. If you can use more senses the information will be more readily remembered. For example, when you are reading and learning a word such as; fruit then the student can be helped to remember it more by writing the word too. When you write you are thinking about what you have learned and then producing it on paper. It also makes you think slower than if you were actually speaking the word therefore you can process it better. Writing helps you to connect the alphabet into words which is beneficial in remembering the things you are learning. Writing can be fun. The teacher can use games on the board or have the students trace words. You can also write a topic on the board and have the students write words that come to mind. In conclusion, reading and writing are key skills that will help any student learning English. Both will take practice on the student’s part and diligence on the teacher’s part. After practice and persistence, the student will be ready to move on to their productive skills. I think a teacher will get great satisfaction and joy out of helping a student put these two receptive skills into practice. John Cheever said “I can’t write without a reader. It’s precisely like a kiss-you can’t do it alone.”
