Being an instructor for students who don’t speak English as their first language has been very rewarding for me. I have been a culinary educator for the past five years in the United States. I thought culinary Arts because I have an undergrad degree in Culinary Arts Management. It was in this position as a culinary teacher to high school that I learned that I love educations and helping others learn. The way I build confidence in my students is by being relatable to them. I am a big kid at heart, because of that kids as well adult learners feel comfortable with trusting me. When a learner of any sort can let down whatever walls they have, whether it be fear or anxiety, they can learn more effectively. Learning to grow with your students is also essential. Just because you are the teacher or educator doesn’t mean you can’t learn something new. I make it a point to try and learn from my students with every session I teach. When I began to teach English to teach foreign learners, it was a new experience for me, but I was eager and up for the challenge. It was challenging because I was used to teaching native English speakers. Because this was a challenge, I worked hard to make sure all students understood what I was trying to convey, also what helps me to build confidence in a student is letting my personality shine through. When a person can see that you genuinely care about there learning experience, the student is comfortable working hard to make the most of their learning experience. There are times when you get a student that is unwilling to learn on a particular day. It could be for several reasons; the student could be nervous, scared, sleepy, or sick. It is in those times that you have to take an in-depth look at the reason why you started teaching in the first place and give the student all you have. In building confidence, you have3 to find new and exciting ways to reach the student. If the student feels that every time they learn with you, they will be bored, this will make it hard for the students to find the energy to want to learn from you. When you make the class fun, and energetic, and somewhat unpredictable, it gives your students something to be excited about what's going to happen each day in class. The student will always feel eager to see and learn what you have to teach. When a student is anxious to learn in my experience, they retain the information better than they would if they were disinterested. When a student can successfully employ the information being taught, it automatically boosts their confidence in what has been taught whether it be a foreign language or culinary arts. With an international learner if the teacher can successfully build confidence in their abilities to speak another language; the student will automatically feel confident in their abilities to comfortably hold a conversation with a native speaker of that language without the fear of messing up or sounding silly. The ultimate goal when teaching is to ensure that the student(s) can successfully implement the lessons taught so that they are able better navigate their world.
