This unit was difficult for me because it has been a very long time since I considered the complexities of English tenses. For even a native English speaker has been immersed in the language for fifty-one years, the grammatical complexities are overwhelming and therefore makes me even more thoughtful and sympathetic to a foreign language learner. Because I have both heard and spoken the tenses many millions of times in my life, I no longer need to ‘think’ about or ‘understand’ their structure, because their correct usage has effectively become wired into my brain. Further, the unit helped to remind me that other languages do not necessarily address the passage of time with the same level of specificity as English, thereby making it difficult for some ESL students to grasp, much less command, this aspect of the English language. Having the specific Activate activities noted at the end of each tense section, with examples and explanation of how the activity cements the concept, will prove very useful to me in the classroom. I plan to adopt many of the activities for my older/intermediate students.
