For any native speaker of English who has a comfortable grip on speaking and morphing one of the hardest languages in the world, TEFL (Teaching English as Foreign Language) provides nothing but opportunities for an interesting life filled with adventure, new cultures, and a change to make the world more interconnected by helping the world learn to communicate ideas with each other effectively. Completing a TEFL course opened my eyes, not only to the opportunities I’ll have around the entire world to teach English, not only to the opportunities I’ll have to explore and learn new cultures and languages, but also opened my eyes up on how to better communicate my ideas and also taught me some rules of my native language that as a native speaker, I’ve never actually learned but have picked up and let become part of my communication and thinking patterns naturally. Completing the course helped me have not only a new understanding but a new appreciation for my own language, and it helped me to learn concepts of my own language that I should have learned within school, seeing as I’ve been in honors English or advanced placement classes the entirety of my academic career, scored perfect on my standardized tests for English, and even have college credit for three English courses. Yet, English classes seem to skip over the important parts of a language, forgetting to teach you grammatical rules and forgetting to break down modal auxiliary verbs and completely skipping over the difference between passive and active voice. But, completing a TEFL course helped to reestablish a mastery over the language that I now feel more comfortable wielding, along with providing me with now future opportunities to embrace a traveler spirit and just go into the world to meet people, help people, and make my life a story that I’m proud to tell. There’s a lot of benefit that comes with completing a TEFL course and certification, and even if you’re not trying to make it your career or your life, it provides the foundation as an excellent and non-time consuming backup plan, it teaches you how to teach language, breaking the barriers that make learning other languages difficult, it teaches you how to interact with people struggling to learn or teaches you how to help those really committed to soar to their next level and towards their goals, and all of these are beautiful skills to learn. I wholeheartedly believe that regardless of who you are, a TEFL course could do nothing but benefit you in the future, whether it be by providing you opportunities to travel and experience the world or the parts of the world you would like to discover, whether it be learning a new language and understanding the different parts that are similar and patterns that are different to your own native tongue, or whether it be learning more about English itself, the power within it and the flexibility of the language itself, developing a new appreciation for how that language has developed and how native speakers have learned most of it without ever actually being shown the grammar rules or provided explanations on why we do what we do.
