This unit discusses grammar, vocabulary and functions. When teaching vocabulary, it is important to keep in mind why some vocabulary item may be easy or difficult. For example, keep in mind the similarity to students' own language and similarity to English words already known. When teaching vocabulary, a straight arrow ESA lesson is usually most effective. When introducing grammatical structures, students will need to know the meaning, the use, the forms and patterns, and the spoken and written forms of that structure. When teaching grammatical structures, a patchwork ESA lesson is usually best fitted. The last part of this unit discusses teaching language functions. These include inviting, rejecting, agreeing and disagreeing, and suggesting. When teaching language functions, a boomerang ESA lesson will usually be most effective.
