There are four things teachers must do to help students learn new language: give them exposure, help them understand the meaning, help them understand how it's constructed, and how to practice and produce the language. Lessons that teach vocabulary and grammar are often straight arrow ESA structures (engage, study, activate) and function-based lessons utilize ESA structures like boomerang (for example, EASA) or patchwork (for example, EAASA.) Since ESA Patchwork lessons are longer, and involve additional work and activities for students, they should not be used for classes under one hour.
