Business English skills are important for professional development, as they ensure that people are well equipped for the Business English world. According to Unit 2: Teaching and Learning students will gain the knowledge of when Business English is used and what type of activities it is used in. This will prepare them for the future. The two receptive skills; listening and reading and two productive skills; speaking and writing are used within Business English. According to Unit 2: Teaching Themes two examples of listening skills are; meetings and telephoning. In meetings information about the company will be provided, usually in a verbal form with accompanying notes. Visuals such as PowerPoint are also often used. On the other hand, telephoning is receiving verbal instructions from a variety of sources, such as talking with a colleague or manager on the phone. An example of when reading is used for Business English is company memos, reports and technical documentation. According to Unit 2: Teaching and Learning most companies of any reasonable size will produce an annual report, which can be a useful resource. Internal memos are also useful. However, it needs to be made sure that this type has been suitable for ‘general consumption.’ Another example of when reading is used for Business English is mail, both written and electronic and faxes etc. There are many opportunities and applications for activities based on reading mail. Mail such as emails are largely used by businesses. Speaking is used in Business English through telephoning, messaging and presentations. Presentations are used to present a specific topic to a group of people. They show findings, statistics, proposals etc. Telephoning and messaging are a big part of communication of businesses. Therefore, learning Business English and ways to communicate is critical in becoming involved in the industry. Without communication, nothing would be clear or planned. That is why ensuring all team members and employees are on the same page and understand what is going on is the key to success. Writing is used in Business English through mail, faxes, meetings, presentations, reports, notes and messages. With mail and faxes the format of the content is crucial, instead of the content. Information to be presented in meetings must be clear and precise. Ideas must be transmitted effectively and efficiently. One effective method for this type of presentation writing is to use frameworking, which involves generating a type of flowchart, to order our language through a process. The writing of reports tends to follow a set framework and familiarity of the company documentation and reports from a wider variety of sources, such as magazines like the Economist are critical. Overall, Business English is largely used within all skills and is shown in numerous ways. Examples where Business English is shown within reading, writing, listening and speaking skills are; meetings and telephoning, mail, both written and electronic, faxes, meetings, presentations, reports, notes and messages. These examples are used in a business daily and that is why it is important to understand how to use them and the importance of them all within the Business English course.
