Understanding the different parts of speech is important in understanding how words can and should be joined together to make sentences that are both grammatically correct and readable. The eight parts of speech are nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns and prepositions/conjunctions. Nouns: name things, people, animals, places, states and qualities which are divided to countable (single and plural forms) and uncountable nouns. There are 5 main types of nouns which are common, proper, compound, abstract and collective. Adjectives: a word naming an attribute of a noun, such as sweet, red, or technical. Generally there is a certain order to arrange adjectives in a sentence. Articles: There are three articles: a, an, and the, which are used before nouns. They are grouped in 2 types: 1. the definite article (the) is used to indicate that the identity of the noun is known to the reader. 2. Indefinite article which indicates something non-specific. There are certain situations in which a noun takes no article. Verbs: a word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence, and forming the main part of a sentence. Verbs have tenses and forms to be used in different cases. Adverbs: a word that modifies or qualifies an adjective, verb, or other adverb, expressing a relation of place, time, circumstance, manner, cause, degree, etc. Gerunds: a verb form which functions as a noun ex: eating ice cream at home. Eating is a gerund. Pronouns: A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun in a sentence, which has 4 main types (personal, possessive, reflexive and relative) Conjunction: is a word that connects phrases, words, or clauses. Conjunction is used to connect clauses or sentences or to coordinate words in the same clause.
