In order to be effective, a teacher needs to be able to tell what approach is appropriate for a particular situation and adapt his/her strategies and to accommodate the context. Things like the setup of the classroom (rows, a horseshoe or groups of desks) and the number of students working together (individual, pairs, groups or whole class) will impact how much interaction and talk time students and the teacher have so this needs to be organised according to the objective of the lesson. As this course stresses a high amount of student talking time with varying amounts of input from the teacher, a horseshoe shaped seating arrangement would probably most frequently be the most appropriately seating arangement as it allows the students to make eye contact and easily engage with each other in a comfortable and not too formal way while the focus is less on the teacher but enough that he/she could hold the students attention and give instructions, explanations or demonstrations. The teacher will be visible to all the students so they can see his/her hand gestures and the teacher can retain eye contact with all the students which will help with student’s involvement and understanding as well as allowing the teacher to keep the class under control.
