We all know that English is the 2nd most common spoken language in the world. If we are ever someplace where we don't know the official spoken language of, we often use English to communicate with people because it is considered a universal language. So it is presumable to think that people would like to learn English fluently because it is such a common and universal language. According to a recent study, children under the age of 10 are much more inlined to absorb information. Therefore mothers and fathers usually send their kids to English learning schools or courses around the ages of 3 and 10. Since I have a beautiful and intelligent daughter of my own, I would like to give some examples on how I taught my child English at home. Firstly I have to point out that the major key is being persistent and patient with your child. It took me over a year to teach my daughter the English language. She was 2 and a half years old when I started teaching her English and by the time she was 3 and a half/four years old, she had learned enough English to form basic sentences and she understood almost everything I spoke. I have had many people ask me how quickly I had taught my child English, and to that I have always told them that one of the most important things, other than being patient, was that the learning process had to be fun for the child. I always used to read fun and exciting English books to my daughter. It is important to read books that they take interest in. My daughter used to love, and still loves animals so I would always read books that had animals and animal related topics in them. Reading English books to your child when they are at a young age will be very efficient. I also used to have English TV programs and cartoon shows on for her, during her television watching periods she had during the day. One of the things that is most efficient, is to speak English 24/7 near or around the child. Which is why I would always tell my mother to speak in English with me around my daughter. My mother would also speak to my daughter in English so that she would get used to the language easier. We would also play with and have dialogues with our Barbies in English so that she would get more accustomed to communicating with someone in English. As I said in the beginning of this paragraph; the learning process needs to be fun, so I would buy toys from Leapfrog which would teach her English while she played with them. She also loves music which is why I would sing English songs and nursery rhymes to her. After a while she learned the songs and we would sing together. Another important factor is that the child has to be comfortable and not be scared or disturbed by the new foreign language he/she is learning. Any time my daughter would get nervous or say "Deme öyle" (which translates to "Don't say that" in English) I would say the sentence in Turkish then right after, I would say the same sentence in English so that she would feel more comfortable. Later on, the more comfortable she got, I began to stop saying the sentence in Turkish and just started talking to her in English. Now, my daughter is 18 years old and very fluent in English as if it is her native language. In conclusion; It is not hard, and it is very beneficial to your child to teach them English at a young age. You just need to be patient and have fun with your child along the way. The best part of it is watching them become more fluent and have more confidence in themselves each day. Like I said in the very beginning, English is a universal language and if you learn English you will be able to communicate with 20% of people in the world, which is roughly 1.5 billion people! Your child will thank you when they grow up. Trust me, mine did.
