All teachers have an enormous influence on their students and the way they progress throughout the entire learning process. What’s more, as teachers we possess the tools not only to help students develop their innate skills but to discover a whole world of possibilities and hidden abilities they didn’t even know they had. So, as it happens, teachers’ role goes far beyond just imparting knowledge: We are the bridge between students and the very best version of themselves. More than Just Content Providers Laying down a bunch of grammar rules for students to memorize is not what teaching is about. In our classroom, we teachers are not only the source of knowledge but the support system that guides students towards their goal. And as so, we need to offer students the encouragement, motivation, and empowerment necessary for them to effectively acquire a second language, despite of the difficulties or their learning styles. That’s why, the way we tailor our classes and the extra mile we take during our lessons matter a great deal. Take, for instance, the rapport we establish with learners. This will determine how much we can get through them and how far they’ll go down the learning process. If as teachers we take the time to get to know our students' interests, motivations, and goals, we’ll be able to put together lessons that not only cover the course objectives, but that match their personal and professional pursuits when it comes to learning English. This will help us change students’ entirely perspective of the learning process and spur their acquisition of the language through the limitless ways English can be related to their lives and how they can use all the many tools it offers to take themselves to the next level. But, this is only possible if teachers step up their games and become more than just a textbook. Understanding that from lesson planning to evaluation and testing, we are able to light up learners’ interests and to inspire them to go further is essential to plant in students the seed that will motivate their success. We are Role Models Teachers are one of the most important pillars students have. There are all sorts of people that play a crucial role in the life of a human being, but the way a teacher molds the type of person an individual will become is more ingrained than any other model. We, teachers, have the ability to influence students from the way they approach an obstacle to their career choices, and this makes us unavoidable role models for them. When learning a new language, learners want for someone who masters the language, yes, but this isn’t enough to help them achieve their goals. Teachers have the power nurture students’ motives to learn English and to boost their determination from the very first contact, throughout the actual teaching of the content and the testing of the abilities they have acquired over a period of time. Therefore, we must keep in mind that every choice we make (even how we conduct ourselves in class and the approach we use for the different lessons and people we teach) will define students overall attitude and aptitude towards the acquisition of the language and whether or not they reach their purpose. Summing up Ultimately, teachers are the driving force that take students down the road of development and self-improvement and, as a result, our performance is of great importance to ensure success. Consequently, if we offer them a relatable, creative, and insightful learning process, we’ll be able not only to help them overcome the difficulties of the journey, but we’ll show learners how they can use their own innate abilities to achieve whatever they put their minds to. And that, to me, is a teacher’s superpower.
