The are four Past Tenses in English: 1) Past Simple 2) Past Continuous 3) Past Perfect 4) Past Perfect Continuous Each of them presents three forms: a) Affermative b) Negative c) Questions Each of the main four Past Tenses (1-4) presents different usages, and they all refer to a past time. As for the ppresent tenses, when teaching the past tense system we should focus on usages, in order to help students understand when to use one or the other. Common mistakes arise from the use of incorrect forms (a-c), the use of irregular past forms and usages. In the Study Phase of the lesson (EAS), the teacher should make students note some of the most common mistakes and provide as many example as possible. It is also advisable to help student familiarize with the most common irregular verbs.
