The past tenses can really help with speaking, listening, reading, and writing. It allows the speaker to express their personal experience and as well things that have happened to other people. Each tense has four aspects which identify the completion of the event or action. Past simple tense is used to indicate or describe something that happened or existed in the past e.g He worked at Starbucks. Past continuous is used to indicate an ongoing event in the past e.g While she was ironing his clothes, he fell asleep. Past perfect tense refers to a past action and a related action before that e.g We had finished dinner before they arrived. and lastly the Past perfect continuous tense that is used to describe actions that were going on in the past up until another action in the past happened e.g When I arrived, Juan had been cooking. Understanding the differences will help any learner express themselves.
