The first page gives a comparison between the present tense verbs we studied and the past tense verbs. The past continuous uses "was and were" instead of "am and is". The past perfect uses "had" with the past participle instead of "has". And for the past perfect continuous we use "had been" with the "ing verb" instead of "has been". Will needs a good textbook with examples to be able to teach the different nuances of meaning.
