There are a few good reasons to complete a TEFL course if you want to teach English abroad or in your own country. The two main outcomes of this course is your re-learning and understanding of English grammar as well as learning the methodology of teaching. The last part is the most difficult one, specially if you have never had experience with teaching. Anything, to anybody. The range of topics consists of how to manage classes, to plan lessons, to evaluate your students or to troubleshoot when necessary. There is going to be a lot of times when the theory may look daunting and overwhelming. This is normal and you don't need to worry about it. You simply need to understand what is taught. The moment to use is going to come after. And then you can be confident because this course has your back covered. It offers life-time job guidance in case you are facing any difficulties to find a job or to cope up with it. On the other hand there is a wide range of grammar units. I found them very enjoyable (and productive for the average score) as I like to understand how language is constructed. The explanations are very clear and schematic with a good number of examples. It is also a good refreshment of what you already know - and what you forgot. As we finish school either we forget the language because we don't use it anymore or we learn to use it mechanically - without thinking - with the result of saying things in a wrong way by system or not knowing why we are saying them right. Back to the original question: why complete a TEFL course? Basically because you want to move abroad. And you need a job before doing it or at least a clear idea on how to make out your living meanwhile you are in that country. This is my main reason for doing it. Don't get me wrong, I live abroad for 3 years already. But I want more. I would like to live in a non-English speaking country where I may have the chance to learn another language, get to know a different culture completely opposite to mine and the most important: to provide less luckier people than me with a glimpse of my experience and knowledge to help them reach their goals. Be it language learning, career advice or just somebody who students can speak to in order to improve their speaking, I am going to be happy to do that. Once you are finished with the course a whole range of options are going to open in front of you. “Where do I go?” you may ask. Everything depends on where do YOU want to go, as our beloved Cheshire Cat once said. The world is a big place and the conditions vary from one country to another. You need to choose what is right for you and your circumstances. There is Europe, where you can reach almost any country within 3/4 hours of flight time. Specially now with the low-cost carriers. There is South-America, Africa or Asia. All of them with a vast range of opportunities and loads of people who want to take the TEFL course in order to study in America (or any other English-spoken country) or just to be able to get a decent job or to make a career for themselves. Personally, I decided to do the TEFL course after a friend’s suggestion when I mentioned that I wanted to volunteer and help people learn English in a less developed country than mine. Having volunteered in many other countries, she asked me why I don't get a certificate to teach English so I could also stay and live in that country if I like it. It sounded like a perfect plan, so I could provide a decent teaching level during my volunteer meanwhile I get experience for a full-time job in a future. Even though its soon to make plans and predictions I am very looking forward to get the most out of this course and I am happy that soon I will have the opportunity to test it with real students in a real classroom. That is the real reason for doing a TEFL course. You get the opportunity to teach, meanwhile the one who learns is no other than yourself.
