When giving a lesson, it is important that it is various and keeps the students speaking the language. The "engage" stage is mostly for piquing the interest of the students, and used as a warm-up. It can introduce the current theme/topic, but shouldn't be overbearing in rules and technical terms, and should be somewhat fun and interesting. Ways to do this include prompts and games which allow students to come up with vocabulary and sentences on their own. It is a good time for the teacher to get to know the students' strengths and weaknesses regarding the topic. The study stage is for establishing the rules of a certain topic, and showing students proper usage of it, as well as enforcing accuracy in their use. This stage may also include games, as well as reading, listening, writing, and speaking activities, but they should again emphasize accuracy in pronunciation, spelling, meaning, and word order. Therefore, this is also the stage where the most corrections ought to take place. When correcting students, it is important to always remain positive and encouraging. The activate stage should begin once the students have been given adequate understanding of the new concept, and allow students to practice their fluency. Here, the teacher should usually do the least talking, and only correct when absolutely necessary. Good activities for this stage might be a group discussion, or role playing between partners or small groups. Of course, different activities apply better to learners of different skill level and age. When correcting, students should first be given the opportunity to correct themselves. This way, they are less likely to suffer a blow to their self-esteem, or lose face. The teacher should only correct students as the last resort, or if the mistake is repeated and unrecognized by the students.
