In this unit I have learnt about different theories, methods and techniques for teaching English as a foreign language to students. I have learnt about the different methods and techniques that can be employed and the merits and disadvantages of using them. What is clear is that whichever methods are employed lessons must expose students to the language especially as this may be the only exposure students have, that teachers are the prime source of information and must impart this to students in a way that they can comprehend it, that students learn best when they are relaxed and do not feel stressed, and that students should be given the opportunity to discover the language for themselves. In this unit I have learnt that the ESA model can ensure that students get the best from lesson by ensuring that three different types of activities are incorporated into a lesson plan eg. Engage, study, activate, I have seen activities which are appropriate for each stage and how to structure lessons in different ways to incorporate them. In this unit I have learnt how, what and when to correct errors/mistakes in the different stages of a lesson and that correction is a very important part of lessons especially within the study phase of a lesson but that this must be done sensitively so as not to demotivate the student. In this lesson I have used how to annotate students work using codes to indicate where errors/mistakes have been made. This provides opportunities for students to self-correct. This is considered the most effective way for students to understand where they need to focus their study and helps the teacher to design future lessons plans.
