It was very helpful to see the various methodologies used in teaching EFL over the years: grammar-translation, audio-lingualism, PPP, task-based learning, CLT, CLL, the sllent way, suggestopaedia, and the lexical approach. As one who went through a traditional ESL program in elementary school, I believe I was used to the grammar-translation, audio-lingualism and somewhat of the lexical approach. I appreciate Jeremy Harmer's approach in ESA where we engage the students in 1) Engage stage, teach a new concept in 2) Study stage, and we provide activities for students to elaborate on what they learned in 3) Activate stage. All the examples and ideas as well as descriptions of each stage was very clear and helpful to see in this unit. Who, when, and how to correct the student to maximize its use without putting students off by discouragement was also a beneficial section of this unit.
