I think the most apparent lesson I have personally gained from this course is a greater understanding of the structure of the english language and all the basic tenses. I am a native english speaker and english is my first language, so a lot of the grammar is very inherent to me. Even though I had grammar class in junior high school, most of my other english education was focused on reading and writing skills and learning through trial and error and by picking up the language around me. I never really considered or reviewed how and why things in the english language were structured in a certain way. I also never considered how I would explain a certain tense or grammar structure to a non-native speaker who doesn't know much english. This course helped me review the basics and think about how I would explain grammar to a low-level or beginning level student. Even in my current role as an Assistant Language teacher in japan, I don't focus on teaching grammar but rather supplementing the lesson with fun games and activities, so that part of the course was invaluable to my future career in tefl education. I also learned how to structure a class more effectively, either using a ‘Straight Arrow,' ‘Boomerang' or ‘Patchwork' style ESA lesson (or a combination of the three styles). Again, in my current role, I don't have the chance to plan a full lesson but only part of the class, so I never considered methodically planning a class from beginning to the end and why to structure a class a certain way. I learned how to break up a class so the students stay active and engaged but also comprehend the material. I also learned some strong classroom management techniques, including different ways to group the students, how planning beforehand can positively impact the classroom management (planning so the time spent writing on the blackboard is very limited) and the importance of establishing a rapport with students.
