I have grown more confident working with students during this course. I am not teaching english as a foreign language yet, but I tutor elementary school students in english, Reading Comprehension and Math. This course has reinforced what I already intuitively knew (but felt uncertain about implementing in the school district environment), especially the idea that learning made fun is powerfully effective. I've also gained a sense of accomplishment at having completed the course. Life happens, AND I have (almost) completed this course! I'm not surprised exactly, but I am pleased. I hope to start a tefl class here in my community where there are many spanish speakers. I expect this population to be primarily adults. I think some of these people resist learning english because they feel deep grief at what they perceive to be a betrayal of their primary language and culture. I understand that feeling, but I also think it is often in their children's best interest for the parents to learn english too. The kids learn in school, but because school classes are usually large and understaffed, it is hit and miss as far as their actual absorption of the language is concerned, especially for adolescents. I think parents learning with their children is a great motivator for everyone. Anyway, we'll see if I can (or have the courage to try and) sell this idea to them. I also have a dream of teaching abroad. I'm uncertain as to the likelihood of that happening because of my age - and my anxiety; I've never been abroad. I also want to bring my husband with me, so he'll need to retire before I can get started. At this point I am completely ignorant about protocols and expectations of employers of tefl instructors. That research comes next on my agenda. I'll probably look into possibilities here in the Western hemisphere first as I have a sense of familiarity here (even though I've traveled very little outside of Washington State and California!). I've always wanted to travel, so I'm hoping teaching english abroad will provide us that opportunity.
