The three areas where I believe I have gained the most are grammar, lesson planning, and resource availability. In addition, I have valued the tutorial support.
First, although I learned grammatical structures many years ago, I had forgotten them. Revisiting verb tenses was especially helpful. The course brought renewed understanding and provided clear methods for teaching grammar that I can put into action. I will use forms, examples, and activities acquired during the course.
Lesson planning was a second area where I have gained personally. Understanding the phases of lesson planning and the variety of ways each can be implemented was extremely useful. Lesson planning is also important for ensuring that all aspects of language are taught including speech, writing, reading, listening, and thinking. The lesson plan template is an important tool. I will use the template, phases, and many other lesson planning techniques gleaned from the course in all of my teaching. In addition, the activities, materials, and exercises developed during the course will be important for lesson planning in the future.
Thirdly, the course introduced me to countless resources available to tefl teachers. The units themselves are tremendous resources as are the books and websites introduced throughout the course. I referred to previous lessons throughout the course for inspiration, insight, refreshment, and to retrieve tools for lesson planning. I will use all of these resources in my future classes.
Finally, having tutorial support has been very beneficial. I have appreciated the feedback from each lesson. Whether the comments have been corrections, new things to think about, answers to questions, or a simple “good work” they have increased my confidence and knowledge base. I created a special file for them and will use them as important resources in the future.
