Personally, I've gained quite a bit from this course. I had not thought much about the actual ramifications of the L1 on the L2 in practice. For instance, some sounds will be more difficult for Asian students to make (“l” and “r” are notoriously difficult), but this is not the only thing to keep in mind. Other things to consider include presentation of material. While modal verbs are important, they aren't the easiest part of english—discerning the differences in tone between each word takes practice. Knowing how to deliver this information and how to get it to stick in students' minds is just as important as having the students actually listening to the material as its being presented. I plan to use this knowledge—both what's listed above and the other things I've learned—to make me a more effective teacher overall. I am not currently teaching any L2 students; however, even L1 students can benefit from a patient, understanding teacher that is willing to approach difficult material from a variety of angles in order to find the way that makes logical sense to students.
