One of the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is to make sure that by 2015, children will be enrolled and complete primary school (if at the necessary age). Although this is mainly triggered towards third world countries, it still applies to children all over the world. This may sound cliché but it is true that the young peoples of this generation are going to be our future leaders. The bottom line is that education is a key factor for success. So in order to meet this goal created by the UN, countries need to ensure that there are enough teachers and classrooms available to anywhere needed. This is where volunteer teaching needs to be taken into consideration. Nowadays there are thousands of programs that are looking for volunteers to teach within one's own city, country and even abroad. People volunteer for a number of reasons whether it is to gain new skills, make a difference in people's lives, stepping out of a comfort zone or to simply just have fun. Not just anyone can be accepted into these programs or projects. There are certain requirements that potential volunteers should meet. It is important that these volunteers are educated. Depending on the kind of position they want to take on, at the least they need a high school diploma or a have earned a college degree. Certain skills are key as well. In this case for teaching they should know how to communicate, be creative and patient. Furthermore, most programs prefer if the volunteer has had some previous teaching experience and if teaching english as a foreign language, a certification is preferred as well. Two programs that include volunteer teaching are the Peace Corps and EPIK (english Program in Korea). Both of these programs are very well known because of how successful they have been. Participants have had opportunities to explore cultures which are completely different worlds along with the desire of teaching which makes the whole experience rewarding. However, volunteer teaching isn't only through specific programs or projects. It can also be through tutoring or school volunteer programs like being a teacher's assistant/fellow tutor. These can be great opportunities for students when they are in high school or college to help build up their resume and also gain an experience. Volunteer teaching can also be applied towards learning sports and other life skills rather than just a school education. Another important point is that children are not the only ones that need an education; there are many adults that are lacking a proper education. This just proves to show that there are so many different areas of teaching that people can volunteer for. Every day there are more opportunities opening up and volunteers taking action. Volunteers should be well respected and recognized because they are taking time out of their own day and applying all their effort to be those people that want to help others lead healthy lives. It truly is amazing to see what we can do individually and as a whole when we have a desire to be that helping hand.
