Unit 14 covered the use of course books and materials in the classroom. There are both advantages and disadvantages to using a book in the classroom. One major advantage is it is less time consuming to use a book than to create a syllabus and all your materials from scratch. The risk here is that teachers may become lazy and rely on the book for all of their materials instead of supplementing the book's materials with more interesting and relevent activities for the students. When using a course book it is important to vary your lessons so they are interesting to the students. The course book should not be used at all times and viewed as the solution to everything. The teacher should instead view it as one of many tools they can use to meet the needs of their students.
