We are in the era of the technology boom. Currently, it seems that when you buy a computer or cell phone by months end it is already outdated. Technology is changing rapidly. During the mid-1700, a new education system was established. At this time, the Industrial Revolution was occurring. Parallel to the time, the education system was structured like an assembly line. Students would present themselves in a single line and sit at desks and chairs which were all in a row, while tests were stacked in piles. Student then would file in line for recess, lunch and for dismissal. The education system greatly reflected the era. Fast forward 250+ years. Of course, education will not evolve as fast as a computer or a cell phone, but education has evolved, right? When looking at the public education system today it still reflects the industrial era. As we advance in society the hope of a pivotal systems, like education, in the united states of America would also need to progress. There are laws mandating that students must remain in school until age 18. If the usa requires education for individuals from 5 – 17 to be in school, again, it would be safe to say that the education system would be the apex of our country priorities. Just like cell phones or computers, the country would be looking for the best and most efficient way to teach the masses, but still make it so every student succeeds. With 250+ years of developing and improving, one would think that usa would have figured out by now a system that works for everyone. Wrong. For example when a gardener is trying to grow produce, the gardener does not plant any seed with expectation of only growing corn. All a gardener can do, is provide great soil, plenty of nutrition, sun and water with the hope that the seed will develop into its full potential. Like the gardener if the teacher can provide a diverse and progressive learning environment each student can grow and excel in their own unique way. The US education system has been growing various seeds with hope that they all turn out as corn. This is not to say that the education system has not made advances. However, the education system is outdated and in need of a remodel that reflects our countries technological advances. At its core the system is still using the same structure from the industrial revolution. The teacher presents the lesson using the board, students replicate the information and then are given various ways to practice the new information. They are then tested on what they were able to retain. This is how it was done back then and is still being done today. We have made technology useful for the teachers to present the lesson via overhead projectors, T.V. and DVD players, but the way students advance in education is still archaic. The teacher would have limitless possibilities, if given the right tools, such as a computer at every desk and which would allow education to develop just like the current era. The computer can keep a better and more accurate record of each student and help the teacher in seeing where the student needs extra attention, as well as the entire class. Students can connect with other students on the other side of the world with just few strokes. Technology in the classroom is the student's greatest ally as well as to the teacher. With applying the advancements in technology to the education system, the U.S. would be ahead and leading the way in innovation. If we want society to advance, it has to start at the core of the U.S., which is our education system. At one point the U.S. was leading the world in education, but now the U.S. is lucky to place in the top 25 in almost every category of education. The only reason this is happening is because, the system is stagnate and it is not evolving with the new technologies available in the current era.
