Motivation in the classroom “Motivation in the classroom” is what I believe to be one of the most important areas a good teacher needs to focus on. From my own personal experience in school, I found that the teachers who could keep me focused and motivated were the classes and subjects I got the higher marks/percentages in. Not just myself but the whole class had a better pass average than other classes doing the same subject within the same school. The teachers accomplished this by keeping a good balance within the classroom, a balance between fun, learning and keeping the subject relatable to the students. By making the subject enjoyable to learn i.e. fun to learn, they made the subject more interesting to the students. By showing the students how the subject then relates to their own lives they once again achieved interest in the subject. In Unit 1 of the tefl course we see the word motivation a lot. About how we the teachers need to keep different level students, youth and adult, motivated. I believe that people who wrote the tefl course wanted to stress how important it is to keep your students motivated. In Unit 1 it states “Whatever the reason a motivated student has a greater chance of success than a student without motivation.” What tools can we use to keep students motivated in the classroom? What can teachers do to make the subject they are teaching more interesting and appealing to the students? This is a more difficult task than one might expect. But there are many tools which we can use. After doing research into what tools a teacher can use in the classroom to keep their students motivated, I found a general consensus on what tools work best. teachers need to develop trusting relationships with their students. Show the students that you care about their learning and you will gain respect from them in doing so. Give students more control, allow them to make more choices on how they complete assignments, learn new tasks, etc. “Having control of your own rights, is a very resourceful motivational technique.” Relate projects and assignments to real life situations. Use technology within the classroom and for assignments and projects. Let the student use what is “trending”, for example Youtube and Facebook. Involve students in the teaching process. You can do this by letting students pair up and “teach” each other the work given. Reward your students for exceptional work and work well done. Also reward students who “try hard” or “do their best” but don't get the greatest results on assignments etc. Create excitement when introducing new concepts. Do this by relating it to the students' lives. If possible, keep the classroom display as stimulating as possible. Put good work done by students up on the walls to create a sense of achievement and to motivate other students to have their good work displayed. Keep in mind that no two students are alike and that each student needs different “techniques and methods” to motivate them and keep them interested. Provide realistic goals for your class as a whole to achieve and for each student individually. By achieving goals we create an environment of success which then in turn keeps students motivated. Lead by example, if you the teacher are motivated you give the students a good role model to follow. Make lessons interesting. Incorporate techniques like making work funny, telling stories, using student and personal experiences, etc. Keep the classroom environment positive, by doing so you instill a feeling of a safe and secure environment allowing students to be themselves more and express themselves better. In conclusion, by keeping our students motivated not only does it keep the student interested but also make our lives as the teacher easier. If the student is willing to learn it can only be easier for us as teachers to teach. Also our students will be doing better and be more positive which then has the positive effect of keeping us the teacher motivated.
