This course has been immensely helpful to me! When I began the course, I had no experience teaching efl abroad, and no knowledge of how to teach english as a foreign language. I wanted to take this course to help me feel more confident and able to teach english as a foreign language before coming to South Korea to do so. Not only did the course systematically break down the different sections and parts of the english language to show how to teach them, but it also helped me brush up on a lot of grammar that hadn’t been touched since I first learned it in school myself. If the course hadn’t broken down the english language for me, I would not have been able to figure out how to teach harder subjects like tenses, parts of speech, etc. A few of the non-grammar lessons I specifically benefited from include the Teaching Methods unit, Lesson planning, and the Evaluation unit. I had not heard that the best way to teach english to foreign students was by following the ESA outline, but it makes sense and I think my students will benefit from it. Although the lesson plans were sometimes frustrating and/or tedious to complete, I appreciate them because it caused me to think about how I would realistically teach something. The evaluations unit I liked because it gave examples for how to test students’ language abilities. Each unit of the course will be applied to my teaching. I know that I will definitely be returning to some of these units throughout the year as I go about lesson planning. Also, I think that some of the lesson plans I completed as assignments can be used as real lesson plans in some of my classes. I teach children, and most of them are beginners, so the techniques in unit 19 will be applied in my classes as well. One suggestion I have for this course is that you include more than one unit on teaching beginners. I say this because I teach beginners, yes, but also because it seems that in most countries, the majority of esl jobs are in elementary or middle schools. Though this course gave a thorough review of the english language, and many helpful ideas for teaching advanced students, very little was applicable to teaching beginners. Perhaps you could include more specifics and ideas about classroom management for elementary students, more activity ideas, and more about how to teach and explain concepts to students with little understanding. Overall I’d say this was a great course though!
