This unit talked about the importance of reading and listening when learning a new language. Reading can be easier for students because the text is there and something they can refer back to and work with for some time if they are confused. Listening can be harder because it is in the moment and they can't go back and refer to anything. You have to recognize the words and comprehend them in the moment. Students need practice with both. There can be some problems when teaching reading and listening. You may need to pre-teach some of the vocabulary so the students can understand a passage. You also need to balance the use of authentic and non-authentic texts. Authentic texts will be challenging if they are not chosen carefully. You need to vary topics to keep students interested and promote understanding in the tasks you have them do.
