This unit was a little challenging. There was a lot of technical skills that need to be understood to teach pronunciation and phonology. Learning about the different uses of intonation was very helpful. Students can be very flat when they are learning a language and it is good to be aware of hoe they should sound and how to help them. I like the idea of using nonsense words and humming out a sentence to get the right intonation. Where we stress words in a sentence is also important. It was nice to see the chart of where to put the stress and why on most words. Learning about the sound joining was also very interesting. We do it all the time and it could be really confusing for a non-native speaker to understand what people mean when they do that. The phonemic alphabet was a little challenging. Some you just know but it takes a bit to get used to seeing words written out by sounds only. I like that the chart is provided. That could be a really helpful tool for students struggling with certain sounds. Learning how certain sounds are made with the mouth or vocal chords was also very helpful. Knowing how a sound should be formed really helps the teacher show or direct the student better. This chapter was very enlightening and will really help me as a teacher.
