Being a native English speaker, one does not think about the pieces and parts of speech that make up the language I use everyday. It makes sense that these need to be understood in order to teach it someone who will be learning it as a second-language. I did not understand the reason for how the English language works, such as the purpose of an adverb or knowing the function of subjects and verbs.
