To be quite honest, I have studied these parts of speech in several languages in college, while training to become a language teacher. To me this unit was more of a revision of previously studied grammar. I think it is quite important to find creative ways to explain the importance of each of these parts of speech to students, because they usually don't really care about the grammatical accuracy (or naming them correctly). While studying this unit, I was constantly wondering about communicative ways of putting this grammatical content into context, so learners would be more motivated to learn and use language instead of the reading about the different parts of speech.
I think in my classroom parts of speech mostly serve as a way to talk about language with my learners. I suppose it is because I teach the younger ones, that I Haven't discussed the importance of transitive verbs, whereas I did explain what a verb was or why the undefined article 'a' changes into 'an' when followed by a noun starting with a vowel.
