Teach English in Chandpara - TEFL Courses
I suppose I found this unit very difficult because I speak english as a first language, and so I take sentence structure for granted. When I was doing the exercises I found myself drawing up mind maps so that I could link one part of speech to another and try and figure out what one concept meant versus another, and in comparison to the others. I found myself getting confused with adverbs and adjectives in particular, because both exist to give more information on another part of the sentence. It wasn't until I connected the adverb with the verb (adverbs give more information on verbs) and adjectives to nouns (adjectives give more information on nouns) that I was able to differentiate the two and be able to recognize which ones were being used in a sentence.
When I began drawing up the mind map, I was astonished at how obvious it should have been Before: all parts of a sentence are connected. I realized that the reason I was getting confused was because I was isolating all the separate parts of speech and addressing them individually. It should have been obvious that one part of speech is dependent on all the others in a sentence. If I am to identify one part of speech in a sentence, I must first understand the sentence, its structure, its purpose, and then identify different parts of speech afterwards.
After completing this unit and this quiz, I feel I have a basic working knowledge of sentence structures. While completing this quiz, I was able to identify the parts of speech when I saw them.
