Traditionally, intelligence has been regarded as a unitary quantity. This narrowly limited the discriminating factor of whether a child was “smart” or “educationally adept”. Teachers could, therefore, focus the creation of their course syllabus to be built from a perspective of ascertaining the subject content to cover and how best to teach it. But the research was done by Gardner to suggest that there are different categories of intelligence and that everyone has some intelligence in every category.

Rapport which can be defined as " the ability to maintain harmonious relationships based on affinity " is more often referred to as when people " click "- they connect, interact well and respond to each other favorably. Often it happens when two people are very much alike or have lots in common. That's one of the reasons it is not always easy for teachers to establish rapport with students - sometimes there is a big age difference, other times it's having few (if any) shared interests. However, there are good reasons for teachers to establish rapport with their students.

Most Adult ESL students are highly motivated students – at first. They are eager to join a formal class setting to improve their English skills for themselves and for their future (career). They usually voluntarily join the class (unless instructed by a manager or supervisor). So in fact, the motivation is internal and comes naturally from within themselves. This is great for the teacher and usually assures an energetic start to the class term. However, as the term continues, the motivation naturally wines down. The excitement fades and the students have more excuses for not coming to class or when in class, have a low participation rate. So, as an ESL Instructor, why is it important to keep your students... As a teacher, there are several roles that one must assume to do their job effectively. Often, the idea of a teacher is to simply show the material and grade the students, but that is not necessarily the truth. As an instructor of any topic it crucial that you know the material, have a positive influence on the class and can be flexible in all situations. I love the expression "A good teacher can make a hard class easy, and a bad teacher can make an easy class hard".

People may think that taking a TEFL course is not necessary to be a good teacher. Along with that, TEFL courses cost both time and money, so, understandably, people question whether it is even worth it to take the course. Although many people have become successful teachers without taking a TEFL course, these courses can provide teachers and aspiring teachers tips for managing a class and creating a more efficient lesson plan. Also, when teaching English in a foreign country, knowledge of the English language is not the only thing someone needs to know; teachers need to be aware of a variety of issues that can arise when teaching in a foreign country. Whether a large class, a single student, with children, business people, online, or in person, a teacher needs to form a bond between them and their students. Though every class has different needs and methods to be taught, the teacher’s ability to create trust and assist in the student’s learning starts during the first interaction and carries on throughout all subsequent lessons. As such, establishing rapport with students helps not only with warming up the students to their ability to learn the subject, but also to improve themselves as well.

At a very early age, I was amazed by the sounds of English. I used to listen to songs in English while one of my parent’s friends was cleaning his car. He used to play them out loud and I wanted to know what the lyrics said. Several years later I had the chance to go to China to be part of a cultural exchange program to learn Chinese. My accepting interview was completely in English rather than Chinese or even my native language Spanish. All paperwork was done in either Spanish or Chinese depending on where I was. Either here in Latin-American or on the other side of the world, the medium of communication was English.

Creating materials is, in my opinion, an enjoyable and resourceful pastime. Ahead of the lesson in which they may be used, I think it helps with the teacher’s ability to understand learning objectives for a lesson. Furthermore, it provides clarity for children (if this is the age group of the class) and contributes significantly to their level of motivation. It is important to note that in creating something that will then be the basis for learning, various topics of interest can be covered. Similarly, materials may be geared towards exploring popular culture and therefore encouraging discussion of ideas or opinions. I think it is safe to say that whether a teacher is dealing with children or an adult group,... [Read more]

I remember taking Russian classes at a local language institute. My motivation initially was my love for Russian culture and a desire to move there. However, actually having the discipline to study the language proved to be a different reality. So with motivation in the classroom, I know from personal experience what can and cannot work - generally speaking. There are three key themes outlined here that address not only providing motivation to the students but also the students having their own motivation. These three themes are teachers motivation, students motivation, and classroom motivation.

There are many reasons as to why you should get a Tefl. I’m not going to list every possible reason for the simple fact that it would take too long, and it is simply unnecessary to list every reason. My main three reasons as to why you should get a Tefl is because it helps anybody learn more than anybody thinks they may and or may not have known, it is highly beneficial to whatever kind of students anybody may teach, and it also helps you learn whether or not if this is a job that you truly desire to have.

Teaching “Business English” is an interesting context for an English teacher. A lot of teachers are concerned about teaching in this context because they think that they need detailed knowledge or experience about business. Even though a knowledge of business is useful, it is not the number one skill or ability a teacher should have. On the contrary, there is nothing to fear as essentially you are still an English teacher and your students (clients) often have the business knowledge they need, but can just not express themselves in English. So it is all about adapting and taking your normal teaching approach from the general English class, and making it work in the business context. A teacher should remember that... [Read more]
