A book is an important source of knowledge and “knowledge is power”. There is no doubt that reading is beneficial to everyone. Shakespeare said, “Book is the nourishment of the world, life without books, as if the earth without sunshine; wisdom without books, just as birds without winds”. Reading builds a good foundation to improve both speaking and writing skills since the more we read the more vocabulary we have available for us to use when we speak or write. This way we could better express our thoughts. Also, the more we read, the broader our knowledge base, and thus the more resources we have when we are dealing with problems. Francis Bacon said, “Reading gives a person with pleasure, give a person... [Read more]

Parents are the first teachers a child interacts with, from age zero to around three or four years when the child is exposed to early childhood education at schools. The parent role at this point is very critical for educating the child in; the culture of the society, religion of the family, the first language of the family and educational mentors among the family. Infants at this age are normally very keen on the happenings on the surrounding, and so they tend to model the behavior of the parents or the caregivers. Parents can help the infants feel secure and protected by playing with them. Infants can learn to build social connections when the parents let them be held by other people when they are around.... I am currently living in Vanuatu, where I am volunteering as a primary school teacher in a small, community-based school. While I am not a registered teacher in my home country, I do have experience in early childhood education, a Certificate in Adult Teaching and I am studying for TEFL qualifications through ITTT. I am privileged to be working alongside five local women; none of whom are qualified teachers and two of whom never finished high school.

Given the lack of qualifications amongst local teachers, it’s easy to suggest that any well-meaning... [Read more]

When talking about children’s education in ESL classrooms there is a lot of courses and resources available for teachers to get trained, skilled, and qualified to promote and guarantee a good learning experience for younger learners. On the other hand, not so much is available for parents to do the same hence most of them are not aware of how they can help ESL teachers. The good news is that not only they can help but their help is essential to improve their child’s language skills. Moreover, this essay will suggest three different ways that children’s parents can help an ESL teacher to achieve the best performance for their child.

What is effective learning? After context and objectives have been developed, the word "effective" makes sense.
When is it most effective? What is it that makes it effective? Who is it that says this? The students? The teacher?
Learning is a reflective process that allows a learner to use prior experience to understand and analyze the present in order to influence potential behavior and form new information. (Watkins, p.1, 2002)
Some meanings of learning consider it to be a passive method of knowledge acquisition that is evaluated by tasks.
Learning is a process that requires both reflection and assessment. The model can be used to explain the process of a single learner actively making sense of a learning... [Read more]

Student motivation is a student's desire to participate in the learning process. It is the meaningfulness, value, and benefits that an academic mission has to the learner. It is also defined as a student's drive from within which guides, activates, and continues a behavior over time. It is simply a student's willingness, need, desire, and compulsion to participate in and be successful in the learning process.

There are two types of motivation. They are intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Due to repeated failures, many learning disabled (LD)... [Read more]

Puppets can serve as a wonderful pedagogical tool in the ESL classroom. Young children are very familiar with them since puppets play a large role in the world of children’s imaginative play, and they have become widely accepted as a pedagogical tool because they are valuable in serving as an anchor in overcoming the language barrier.
Their potential in ESL teaching could be used to enhance instruction and provide many useful benefits. Research clearly shows the benefits of using puppetry in English language teaching, and the use of puppets is an effective approach in teaching English to young learners. From the perspective of a preschool teacher, research results are very... [Read more]

I'm pleased to say that I could teach or lead a class to learn English as a foreign language, challenging and rewarding. I have little experience tutoring adults in learning English. My studies learning what could be ahead for a teacher looking to lead a class in English was so rewarding. The challenge to get the students to engage in activities is a top priority for the teacher. I'll have to develop and practice proven ways to present to the class a lesson where the students may absorb the English language and will stay with them for the rest of their life. I had to give some thought about what I would write for my Essay and how I would present this topic, so I'm happy to be able to present flashcards for... [Read more]

In a world where communication is the most important thing and language - your own or a second (even third or fourth) - grammar seems to be overlooked by people as unimportant. But is that really so? And is this true for all areas of communication? And do we only tend to say this because grammar is challenging for both teachers and learners?
This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Amal D. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT.
In traditional education, grammar was at the core of all language lessons - you started with it, you finished with it and very often had it for homework. Classes seemed long and not much variety was shown because it... [Read more]
