A Turkish proverb infers: "One who speaks one language is one person while one who speaks two languages is two people."
It refers to the cultural influences of language learning. It signifies the fact that with learning a new language comes a change in the way the mind works.

Japanese learners of English face challenges which are based on background and cultural aspects, racial barriers, perception of the English language, as well the lack of freedom of expression. This becomes the basis on which their motivation, or lack thereof, to study English is built. Coming from a motivational background, I was self-assured that my plans to get my low-level High School students motivated about learning English would be less challenging to implement. Reality proved otherwise as this process has required the breaking of certain barriers in order for me to be successful in my endeavors. Following is a further explanation on each of the different challenges which I have observed to be the cause... [Read more]

It is quite unfortunate that travellers from the United States often have a bad reputation for being loud, inconsiderate, and oblivious. What does cultural sensitivity mean? According to Southeastern University, cultural sensitivity means “being aware that cultural differences and similarities between people exist without assigning them a value.” Therefore, a teacher should refrain from assigning a particular value, such a better or worse and good or bad, to any activity or interaction. It is important to be aware that both the teacher and the student(s) carry certain cultural norms, and a level of respect with these differences in culture is vital for student success. As such, how does a teacher incorporate cultural awareness into their classroom curriculum?

The kind and brave monkey risks himself to finally reach out and snatch the fish from the threatening waters, placing the fish in a safe and dry place. The monkey immediately got back to his tree branch and full of joy observed the fish jumping up and down of excitement, but soon settled into a peaceful rest. They might imagine how organized their class with being or how well behaved their students are. One thing they must consider before they start teaching is which method or methods of teaching they will use to help their students learn. In a writing classroom, instruction in proper pronoun use is typically limited to a short lesson on pronoun agreement. The pronoun must agree with the antecedent in both gender and quantity. Apart from this, pronouns are not seen as worth much class time; they are assumed to be uncomplicated aspects of the writing process. Many teachers will overlook pronoun disagreement in student writing with the assumption that there are writing errors that are more urgent than instruction in the finer details of pronoun agreement (e.g. the “correct” pairing of the singular “everyone” with the singular “he/she” rather than the colloquial-singular “they”). Pronouns are assumed to be easy to ascribe to others and... [Read more]

As an English teacher (or any teacher) it is your responsibility to craft, adjust, and/or carry-out a course experience that will be the most effective and enjoyable one possible. The instructional lesson which was observed for this assignment was English as a second language classroom listening lesson. There were four students in the room during this lesson. These four students ranged in age from grades ninth through twelfth. Two students were male and two students were female. There was one instructor in the room. The primary teaching methodology used by the instructor in this ESL course was The Task-based approach to language learning. This instructor did well in explaining details, breaking down complicated topics, and conveying her message. We have many teachers throughout our lives and in very differing forms. For example, our very first teachers are ourselves, as we learn to grow through nature and get stronger. Our next teachers are our parents, family, and friends who essentially teach us how to communicate with others, right from wrong (if we are lucky!), and how to navigate our way through life. We also have our more formal education in the form of Nursery or Kindergarten, Primary, Secondary and Further Education such as College or University.
