I would start by saying that talking about my own experience either as a learner or a teacher it is really important to love what you are doing. As a student, I like a teacher that may help me not understand the subject but also be so interested that I would start doing research and learn more about the topic. We as teachers have a lot of responsibility, we can make the difference between someone who has to learn the language only because of her or his parents told them to learn a foreign way to communicate with people from other places. I want to go further and make them fall in love with this language.

After galivanting around India, Central Asia, and Europe for the summer, we finally decided to head back to Vietnam for another year of teaching. However, this time we were going to make a huge change! Instead of going back to our jobs, apartment and friends in Ho Chi Minh City, we decided to check out what Hanoi has to offer. Although it’s the same country, it’s like starting all over again! As we have only recently gone through this huge change, we have decided to put together 5 important things to help you make the move to Hanoi and teach English.

The number one question I had to answer before deciding to start Practical English Teacher was “Do I want a new boss or to be my own boss?”. I spent months asking myself this before I finally decided to do it. There’s a lot of security and credibility that comes with working for a larger ESL company. And I’m not knocking anyone who wants to do that but if you’re like me and you’re looking for some advice on where to start with your own ESL Service, let’s talk.
First and I would say most importantly, ask yourself, what is your teaching style? What is your expertise and how can you use that? People tend to say “I just don’t have a business mind” well then, what... [Read more]

One of the most important things to consider when teaching business English is what your students want out of the English lesson. When you talk about business English you aren’t talking about teaching adults versus teaching children, these are business professionals that often work in international trade where English is the language of business. You’re unlikely to go over the names of utensils in English in a business English class unless the students you’re working with are looking to open a restaurant, and even then being able to coherently discuss how much it costs to open a restaurant and the operating costs of a restaurant are more important than them knowing how to correctly pronounce knife. As a teacher, our role is to be the leader in the classroom. However, this does not mean that we should be speaking in front of the class the entire class time. As the native-speaking teacher, the students need to hear our voices and hear our accents but what is equally important is that the students are all engaged in the lesson and that they all are practicing themselves. If a teacher speaks 90% of the time and students sit back and listen, then they will lose focus, not practice themselves, and the teacher will tire out. That is why I will propose two ways we can decrease teacher speaking time.

One of the routes you might want to think about taking after your TEFL course is to train other people how to teach English. It can be very rewarding seeing people who have never taught before gain in confidence and ability over a short space of time. What does it take?
The first step to becoming a teacher trainer is to complete your TEFL certification course. Don’t feel that only people who do particularly well are cut out to be trainers. You need to empathize with your trainees, and it can be advantageous to have struggled through and only just about passed the course as long as you’ve then developed your skills with experience. I founded an English training center in China in 2017 and have been teaching a wide variety of English classes since then. I teach both one-to-one and groups, and I find them to be very different.
Prospective TEFL teachers may want to consider: which kind of class fits you best?
Below I would like to compare my experiences in teaching and managing these two types of class, and also give some suggestions for prospective TEFL teachers to make a realistic choice.

The first difference, obviously, is the class size, which decides your budget. When teaching one student, a single room of 10-20 square meters big would be enough. A group class will require at least 30 square... [Read more]

Do you dream of using your TEFL certification to teach online? Online teaching is booming, and it’s an amazing opportunity, but working for an online teaching company also has its pitfalls: it’s hard to tell which companies are legit, wage information can be scarce, and you can be treated like a number rather than a person. The internet is unfortunately full of online teachers’ horror stories of being treated like replaceable commodities. To make matters even more confusing, social media is crawling with recruiters and teachers posting referral links to work at their companies. It’s hard to know who to trust!

I remember taking Russian classes at a local language institute. My motivation initially was my love for Russian culture and a desire to move there. However, actually having the discipline to study the language proved to be a different reality. So with motivation in the classroom, I know from personal experience what can and cannot work - generally speaking. There are three key themes outlined here that address not only providing motivation to the students but also the students having their own motivation. These three themes are teachers motivation, students motivation, and classroom motivation.

As language acquisition through immersion goes, reading is positively amazing. Where movies may help with attitude and tone, reading allows us to see the words, form visual connections between them, and familiarise ourselves with spelling, punctuation, and structure. The best results, of course, are seen in readers who do it for pleasure, and for whom the point of reading is not simply to be done with it. How, then, do we get our children to read for fun when most of them seem to dread it?
