There was so much material that I wasn't aware of, and I'm glad that I've had a chance to be introduced to my newly found linguistics information (i.e. conditionals, the many structures of the present, future, and past tenses, reported speech, etc.). Even if I decided that I didn't want to teach overseas (or teach overseas at a later time in my life), I could definitely use the grammar information and various units' games suggestions in...  [Read more]

Many assume that simply being a native speaker of english is all that is necessary however this is very far from the truth. Countries like South Korea and japan that had previously accepted english teachers solely on the merit of being a native english speaker have also caught onto the notion that more training is necessary effectively teach the language. As parents, I think we are all teachers on some level and have a certain amount of ability in us to teach. For one to be a successful teacher though, he or she must not only be knowledgeable about the subject being taught in the classroom but also needs to be passionate about teaching. There are so many factors both on the teacher's and the student's part that play a major role in the success of teaching and learning. A teacher...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences As a young child, I was, for some reason, obsessed with the idea of learning French. I tried a couple of languages, including Finnish at some point, but kept going back to French. I have no idea why because I was never exposed to the culture or the language itself at that age. I doubt I even knew anything about the country itself. I think I assumed learning French would make me sound smarter but, the joke's on younger me, I have no skill in French and never have. I tend to struggle with romance languages in general. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Nicole H. Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences Throughout high school and college, I mainly focused on learning how to speak Japanese as my second language. Unlike English, Japanese is a fairly phonetic language. Two of its three writing systems, hiragana and katakana, are phonetic. This makes it easy for foreigners to learn because each syllable, also known as sound clusters in some circles, is almost always said exactly how it is spelled. The third writing system, kanji, is not and, as such, is much more difficult for foreigners to learn because kanji are essentially pictures that describe their meaning. They are much more difficult to learn and use in everyday speech. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Nicole H. One way parents can help their children learn English at home to let them watch television or movies. It may seem to counterproductive to have your child study using entertainment but I believe it's a great, casual learning tool. Find a show or movie that your child really likes and watches often in their target language. In this case, it would be English. It should also have subtitles in their native language so that they can follow along. I find that Disney movies and American cartoons are the easiest to find translated into a variety of languages. This resource is particularly good for...  [Read more]

Mark Crocker Alumni Experiences Motivation is one of the most influential aspects of learning a new language. For all language learners motivation varies, but it is surely an essential part in achieving fluency within any given language. Motivation can be dependent upon age, language fluency (both first language and second language), affective filter (i.e. an individual’s comfort level within a particular setting), and many other factors. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Nicole H. In learning a new language, motivation is often dependent upon age. Age can affect an individual’s desires and reasons for learning a new language and thus influence the motivation to learn and become fluent within the language. As children, it is often thought to be naturally...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas Many programs allow educators to become volunteer teachers, specifically, my experience as a TEFL instructor in the Peace Corps China program has provided me with valuable insight into the importance of establishing strong relationships with students from different cultures. Teaching English in rural China was filled with many challenges but I believe that the most important challenge that I needed to overcome was bridging the cultural gap with my students. By bridging this gap, I was able to build strong student-teacher rapport and help the students improve their English language abilities over time. It can offer students who otherwise would not have access, the opportunity to learn English and the possibilities which come with it. It can also offer teachers the ability to travel, experience a new culture and language for themselves as well as provide a great experience to improve their skills. Federico Riva Teaching Ideas Throughout this course, my favorite units have been the ones that teach us how to lead an effective lesson and have a fun classroom environment. I love all the suggestions and teaching ideas they give, and it excites me to think about using those for my future lessons. For that reason, I chose the topic of five activities with flashcards. This essay will be a perfect opportunity for me to delve further into my favorite part of this class and plan some fun things to do. When I move abroad I plan on teaching young children, mainly kindergarten-aged, so my five activities will be geared towards young learners. They need way more energy, fun, and excitement in their lessons than teenage or adult learners because their attention spans are so short, so I tried to...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas It is critical and necessary, that as purveyors of educational content, a teacher ensures they undertake periodic analysis of their methods, rationale, and motivations for the job. Periodic self-analysis is important, as it can be one defining factor in what separates a “good” from a “great” teacher. In my experience as a teacher, I have often used a teaching log to note my findings and experiences in the classroom. Brookfield (1995) defines a teaching log “as a weekly record of the events in a teacher’s life that have impressed themselves most vividly on his or her consciousness”(p.72). In this paper, I present four main ideas, based on experience, in favor of a critical self-analytical method and the use of a teacher’s log to enhance...  [Read more]
