Teaching English abroad is a great way to travel the world and experience other peoples and cultures. As English teachers it is important that we take the time to learn about the countries we choose to live and work in not only to show respect to our hosts but also to help our students to learn more productively. Understanding the cultural or social reasons behind why people in different countries behave or react in particular ways can help us to prepare better lessons and activities for our students and develop better relationships with our colleagues. Being aware of the subtle social cues that exist in any society can mean the difference between a truly rewarding experience and one that you wish never to repeat. When considering regions such as Latin America it can be tempting... [Read more]

In the world we live in, being different is often deemed as bad. Where being the minority is often looked down upon. Sometimes we don’t like to admit that, but it is true. What people need to realize is that we are no different from one another. Someone from rural China is just as much of a person as I am even though we live thousands of miles away. The only difference is our story. Where we came from, whom we know, what we stand for. Our story and our background are what make us all unique and special. The sad reality is that the vast majority of us will never be able to experience another persons’ life. An astronomically large amount of the world’s population will never be able to step into another... [Read more]

It’s Black History Month! Now, Black History often falls short in EFL classrooms but if you are able to include it into your EFL curriculum abroad (and you should!) here is an important reason to do so:
You get to focus on the amazing culture, history, and contributions of Black people, something a lot of EFL students would never otherwise learn.
Hold a class meeting to introduce the topic and explain why a month of Black History is needed and brainstorm some famous Black people the students know. This is also a great time to read aloud “Our People” by Angela Shelf Medearis. In this book, a father is telling his daughter about the history of their people - how they were kings and queens and invented amazing... [Read more]

The English language holds an important position in today’s world. There may not be many people as native speakers of the English language, but most of the people all around the world somehow are influenced by English. It is the first language of nearly 400 million people and the second language of another 300 million people. Furthermore, 750 million people are learning English today. It is expected that half of the world’s speaking population will be proficient in English by the year 2050 (Hargraves, 2003). There is no other existing language that this high volume of people tries to learn it as a foreign language.

Lately or, it is better to say, since the “boom” of the globalization processes in the middle of the 1990s the world is facing many profound changes in different aspects of life: the way people communicate, the way people buy and sell things, new services and professions has emerged, the way people travel, the way people move from one place to another in their day by day activities, the way people know new cultures and so on. And all of these changes are also true to companies and their business, to the development of new technologies, to governments and to the way heads of states rule their countries.

Most would say it’s an almost impossible task, one that requires a lot of patience and repetition. How are you supposed to keep their interest? How do you communicate to them efficiently despite not being physically present? Teaching children may not be an easy task, however, I believe it would be a most rewarding one. Teaching online is something that I have been keen on and would like to venture into after completing this course. We are moving into a digital world where we will all soon be connected over the internet. This is a wonderful opportunity to be able to reach and enrich the lives of children globally.

A language is called a “global language” when it achieves the official position and education preference in every nation. A global language comes to be used by more people than any other language. The essential reason to make a language global or international is its power for people. The power includes the power of the military, politics, and economy. English is a universal language. It is the world’s second native language and the formal language in 70 countries. English-speaking countries are accountable for about 40% of the world's total GNP, while English is used everywhere in the world.

People around the world are choosing to learn the English language for several reasons. Online education has two reasons, globalization, and digitization. Why digitization is so important, is easy to explain. Without the Internet, Computers, or other digital stuff it is not possible providing online education. The Internet and Computers need to be relatively highly developed. When there are too many failures in the system, like no Internet access or the Computer has too less capacity, it will just lead to frustration and not to improve regarding the subject one wants to learn.

Many people may think that the worst part of being an Uber driver are the belligerent midnight trips from downtown to the suburbs or the aggressive pre-coffee commuters or the fact that a five-minute drive can take thirty minutes because of gridlock. However, as an Uber driver of one year, I believe that the worst part about the job are trips to the airport. When I interacted with passengers going to the airport, I would think of all the new things they would get to try and the different cultures they would learn about. The problem with these trips was they were a constant reminder that the world is just waiting for us to explore it, but I was stuck leading a conventional and mundane life.

One of the most valuable human attributes is imagination. An active and healthy imagination can be inspired by many things. One of the most significant inspirations behind a lively imagination is reading. Alternatively, an image can contribute to valuable characteristics, such as bravery, dignity, and leadership. Reading can introduce people to comprehension, vocabulary, new places, languages, cultures, ideas, perspectives, information, words, and sentences. Speaking and reading are great ways to learn new words of another language, as well as learn how to structure those new words in a sentence.

What is volunteer teaching? In my opinion, it is bringing justice to our life. The modern world is made up of contrasts, though it is difficult to realize when living in civilization. But despite the fact that many countries are developing very quickly, there are still many places in the world where people live in much less favorable conditions.
This, of course, relates to many areas of life: ecology, medicine, the opportunity to get a job, working conditions and wages. At the heart of many of these points is the most, in my opinion, important one – an education. It depends on education what children will grow up in any country. Therefore, many teachers from civilized countries decide to use their educational... [Read more]

If you want to be a TEFL teacher around the world, it is important to make sure you are as well prepared as you can possibly be before entering a classroom. It is equally important to have a good understanding of the country and culture you are hoping to make your home while you are teaching.
The countries of Latin America are an increasingly popular destination for newly qualified TEFL teachers. While they are generally more relaxed when it comes to formal rules of etiquette than other regions of the world there are, as with any country, particular social norms that any visitor should make the effort to understand.
