People say: “Children today, the world tomorrow “. So, what is child development and how do you develop foreign language abilities for children?
This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Anh P. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT.
Child development is the sequence of physical, language, thought and emotional changes that occur in a child from birth to the beginning of adulthood. During this process, a child progresses from dependency on their parents to increasing independence. At the same time, child development is strongly influenced by genetic, environmental factors and the child’s learning capacity.

When a child is born, parents are their first teachers and the people responsible for educating their children in the first few years of their lives. Young children pick up on the gestures, phrases, words, manners, etc., that their parents use every day, which in a sense, makes the parent the first teacher a child has. This is the parent's job until the children are enrolled in a school program. When the child enters a school program, the educator's main role is no longer on the parents. Instead, parents have a new partner, the teacher; however, the parent's job is not finished. It is only changing. Just because the parent's job modifies... [Read more]

Phonemics according to the Merriam Webster dictionary is a branch of linguistic analysis that consists of the study of phonemes. In other words, it could be explained as the study of the sound system of a given language and the analysis and classification of its phonemes. Phonemics awareness, on the other hand, is the ability to examine language independently to its meaning and to manipulate its component sound[1].

As a child, my mother dropped me off at school every morning before she goes to work. I would go throughout my day at school and stay in the after school programs until my mother picked me up late in the afternoon. Like many other single mothers, my mother had to work a lot like to support the family. I grew up going to school and doing my homework to the best of my abilities without the extra encouragement from a parent. My mother would ask if I did my schoolwork and I would tell her that it was done at school. Since she was very busy working she trusted in the school to do their job in educating me and she trusted me to do my part in my education.

Education is a core part of our life through the socialization process from birth to death. It affects a person’s capacity and thinking about defining what is right and what is wrong and also provides us to criticize the information which is taught by the community, family, school and so on. The issue of testing and/or evaluation is an important topic in general, however, it is of personal import to me because I currently work as a full-time ESL teacher in China, over half of who are pre-school and kindergarten age. In China, children begin primary school (first grade), at age seven, plus they have three years of mandatory kindergarten, which begins at age four. English is not taught in Chinese public schools until primary school (grade three), and then, for only forty minutes, three times per week. For these reasons, the average Chinese child is not formally taught English until they are nine years old, and even then, for only three hours per week.
