I believe discipline in the classroom has a time and place. Depending on the age group or behavior of the classroom will define if discipline is needed. When discipline is simple, the teacher must ask themselves one question, is it disrupting the student's time to learn? If the answer to that question is a yes then action must be taken at that point. As a future teacher, I think the best way to make it clear to the student that bad behavior will not be tolerated is by implementing a three-strike system: the first strike is a warning, the second strike is detention and a paper assigned to the student asking them to write what mistake they made and how they will improve in the future, the third strike is being sent... Due to the need for English skills in today's era, English Teachers are seen around the world. It is perceived in this generation how English is widely used, how English is a must, and how English makes people comfortable. These are the reasons why English teachers travel across boundaries to educate people with English skills.

A consideration for the categorization of your language learners is actually their language level.
So within any class the language level the students should all have, (assuming that your class is not a mixed ability class) is usually at one particular level.
Typically your students will have had some form of level test to put them into one of the levels and in ESL teaching there are often five different levels of grouping described.
Level one, the most basic level is called Starter. Moving on from that the Elementary level, the next one beyond that is level three, called the Pre-Intermediate level and then on to the Intermediate level and finally level five, which is called the... [Read more]

Firstly within your lessons do always use English as the language of instruction. You need to speak slowly and you need to reduce the amount of teacher talk time by using gesture and mime as often as possible.
Do play games as often as possible but bear in mind that the games that we're suggesting here are interactive communicative games that have some educational purpose.
Do try to make yourself aware of any problems that they do have, either within school or outside of school because they can affect the way that the students behave and interact with each other.
Do try to change the dynamic of the classroom as often as possible and this can relate to the actual seating... [Read more]

If you have already switched to online ESL teaching, you've definitely been using an online board. There are many good options out there, but I prefer using Miro over the others. Miro is a convenient online whiteboard with lots of fun and interactive tools to use during the class and outside.
In this blog post, I'd like to share several interactive ideas to enhance your online ESL lesson.
At the beginning of the online ESL lesson, start with a warm-up conversation. Ask your students about their mood, day, weather, etc. Just do some small talk of any kind. To support the conversation, you can encourage your students to draw pictures on Miro... [Read more]

Teaching in a classroom is a privilege. To have the opportunity to impart knowledge onto others, such as young learners who will shape future generations of this world, is a gift. Not everybody can be a teacher, however, and those who do have the desire to teach must have certain qualities and personality traits.

According to Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. As parents what is our role for our children to be educated? How would we reach out to us and explain to them the importance of education? How would we encourage them to pursue their dreams of graduating college despite the struggles that arise? How we would inspire them with Nelson Mandela’s quote “Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine that a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. It is undeniable that rapport between the teacher and students and between students themselves makes the class successful and enjoyable. However, some teachers face problems trying to establish rapport with the students. Being an experienced EFL teacher, I keep facing the same problem: it is hard for me to create a relaxed atmosphere in the classroom and keep a balance between being students’ reliable friend and their authority.

There is no doubt that a teacher plays a vital role in the classroom. To become a good teacher, the teacher should pay full attention to their teaching and students’ learning. In particular, teachers serve many different roles in the classroom rather than just convey linguistic lessons such as Controller, Organizer, Assessor, Prompter, Participant, Tutor, Resource, Model, and Observer. Over the years, there are a great number of changes in the teaching approach along with the learning strategies. The classroom becomes ‘student-centered’ rather than ‘teacher-centered’. This will largely depend on which type of activity and what we wish the students to achieve.

Using a recruiter to help you find a teaching job abroad can be a rewarding and satisfying experience for many, provided you choose the right recruiter and you know what to expect and which questions to ask.
Teachers use recruiting agencies for many reasons, including relying on a recruiter to find a legitimate contract that offers a fair salary package. A recruiter will work with you to help you find a position that meets your requirements for a teaching position and they’ll help you break down the application process step by step.
Recruiting websites should have plenty of information about the job application process and they should be able to explain this process to you... [Read more]

In my opinion, Grammar plays an important role in English Learning and Teaching, because Grammar is the heart of any language. Learning English is the same as building a house and its grammar acts as a foundation and frame. Knowledge of English grammar helps us in the correction of mistakes and improvement of writing work. A person cannot learn a foreign language accurately only through a process of unconscious assimilation.

Stories expose the students to more language, they engage and motivate the learner, they can be used to teach the structure of a language and the concepts about print which may be different between cultures. Stories with images can also help the students anchor their knowledge about the text. Listening to stories also helps the students hear accents and how words are pronounced. However, it is important to choose the correct book or story for the students you are working with. If familiar storylines are chosen the student is more likely to understand the story. It is also important to take into consideration the interests of the students and to find text on those topics.

Teachers are no different from anyone else when it comes to feeling nervous about embarking on a new venture. Whether it’s an inexperienced teacher walking into his/her first classroom, an experienced teacher to teach English to foreign students in a foreign country, or a person walking onto a stage to address an audience of his/her peers for the first time; they are out of their comfort zone, moving into a place that they’ve never been to before, not knowing what to expect or exactly what will happen. There is a churning feeling in the pit of their stomachs and an almost overwhelming fear of failure. I believe this is completely due to his amazing classroom management skills. I try my best to model my own teaching skills after Mr. Powers while teaching here in Istanbul, Turkey. While slang and idioms may not be essential to clear communication, especially when their meanings are very different from their packaging, they do communicate something more subtle: ‘I’m trying to observe the nuances of your language to better connect with you’. Slang lets you come across as casual, intimidating, clever, or whimsical in ways that straightforward language can’t. FluentU English Educating Blog puts it this way: “Teaching Idioms Is Teaching Fluency”. Communicating your personality is easier when you are more fluent, or at least when you have more idioms under your belt.

At 25 years old, I heard Peru calling my name and could no longer ignore it.
I dreamed of moving abroad alone again after teaching English in France — and it was finally happening, with TEFL certification in hand.
Unfortunately, many friends, family members, and acquaintances had a different reaction. I saw wide eyes and heard words of concern.
Instead of sharing in my excitement, I spent most of my time fending off people’s fear-mongering questions or convincing them that my plan was actually a good idea.
Spoiler alert: it was a fantastic idea.

When we talk about learning I do not think the subject we are teaching makes any difference but the motivation keeps the same importance for you and student.
