I was extremely overjoyed when I saw this as one of the options for the “Summative Task”, because I have been teaching EFL online for about a year and a half, and EFL in general for about two years.

I had already been teaching EFL classes for about one year when a friend of mine introduced me to the company he worked for which specialized in online teaching. Before then, I had heard very little about online teaching. The way he explained it sounded intriguing and I was eager to see what teaching online was all about. Fast forward a couple of weeks... Motivation plays one of the most important roles in a teacher’s pedagogy and students' process of learning. In the classroom both sides have to be motivated, students and teachers likewise. It will make work productive and resultative. So, before we get into the details about how to keep the atmosphere motivated in your classroom, let’s figure out what is ‘motivation’, what types of motivation exist, and what can help us to be motivated and motivate others.

Teaching is not generally a lucrative profession, because in Africa we have strange financial priorities. But there are so many countries out there that make teaching quite a better living particularly teaching the English language as a foreign language. I don't think and neither do I believe that one can just wake up and call himself or herself into a particular field without training. Fully ingrained should one be, call himself or herself an English language teacher and this can not be achieved without education.

Teachers need to be able to set boundaries in their classrooms. A classroom without boundaries and consequences is a great disservice to every student in the class. When a child misbehaves in school, he/she is cheating the other children out of their education because the teacher is not teaching when he/she is dealing with behavioral issues.
Teachers have to tread carefully when dealing with disrespectful... [Read more]

Even before graduation, an opportunity to conduct English classes online jumped onto my lap. As a graduating student who has studied English and its nuances as well as its beauty, I thought it would be a great experience to delve into this new world. I have never thought that such an industry exists and that it has not been my ultimate goal to carve a niche in such. However, time passed and it still holds a special place in my heart.

The 20th century brought in its wake the concept of globalization, changing the dynamics of the world to what we have come to know it as today. As the world continues to move towards becoming a grand global village, many countries, people and things which once seemed so far out of reach are now more readily available and closer to home. Undoubtedly, with the advent of globalization, communication has become paramount to the ways in which we share knowledge and gather or receive information. Why? Because without this, humans will have a much more challenging time building relationships with others be it for economic, social or spiritual gains (just to name a few).

In most developed nations, technology is prevalent in all areas of life. Adults and children alike are exposed to technology from the moment they wake up, and until they go to bed. Computers, social media, toys, and transportation are just a few of the many areas in which technology is a part of daily life. Teachers need to think about the ways they can include technology in their lessons.

Back in 2014, I worked at a nursery school here in South Africa. I was the English teacher for the three to four-year-olds at this school. There were 32 students in my class. My class was so small that during nap time two students had to sleep on one mattress. There was no space to leave the class once the children had fallen asleep. I had to make sure that all my belongings were out of the class once the students came in for their naptime or I had to leave whatever was forgotten behind once I was one my way to my next job. In unit 3 on page 21, they talk about the whole class grouping pros and cons and that is really explained well where they say "class grouping is suitable for activities where the teacher... There is widespread recognition that the demand for EFL services in developed nations is high. A myriad of EFL/ESL courses has sprung up aiming to train teachers to meet this need. Most of these EFL/ESL certification courses function on the premise that the teacher will be working with students for whom the acquisition of English is either a matter of personal aspiration or a requirement for a job position, visa, etc.

The unofficial motto of the JET Programme is ‘every situation is different (ESID).’ This is completely true, and every JET’s day looks different depending on whether they work in a public or private school, whether they have co-JETs or are solo, their teaching partner’s style, and the school’s schedule. I teach in a private junior and senior high school in central Tokyo, where students are aged 12-18. Talking with my peers and colleagues from other elementary schools as well as my own, there are some common problems that many students seem to experience in an English class. Much of language learning comes through language experimentation; steering away from examples and formulas and attempting to arrange your own ideas into words. No matter what a student's goal may be in learning English, they will eventually have to do this by leaving the classroom and using English on their own. Activities like creative writing are one method to encourage the practice of experimentation and expression in ESL students. In this post, we're going to look at five different activities students can use to put their thoughts into writing.

One of the most important aspects of becoming a great teacher is establishing a positive rapport with students. Even with all the technical knowledge of teaching theory in the world, a class will not be successful without creating beneficial bonds between the teacher and pupils. With a tactful and thoughtful approach to building a deep rapport with the students, these bonds can establish a learning environment in which the students and teachers can thrive.
